Found this. Just like it did 6 years ago before I had it line honed. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

That doesnt look like cam material.. looks more like the align bore was waay outa wack!
I see a few lines from debris. But that wasnt the major issue. |

I'm guessing that the bearing material has worn away, hence the copper color. _________________ 92 Camaro

Most bearings are 3 layers. Steel backing, then copper, then lead babbit. You're seeing where the babbit has been worn away down to the copper layer.
But look its only worn on 1/2 of the bearing, and not the same on every bearing. To do that the crank has to be pushing on that half more then the other half. It might be normal in an extreme case to wear out all the bottom halves(the half without the groove) because those halves are what the cylinders push down against. But it should never wear half here, half there. This means something was crooked. Most likely the crank bore in the block The cam Paul had go flat accelerated the wear by putting grit in the oil. You can see some of that in the parallel grooves and specs stuck in the babbit. But the fact that Paul said the rod bearings arent too bad, means there was a problem more specific to the mains. (the mains also get oil first, so they get the most grit)
I also don't like how the copper is showing in a sort of diagonal pattern. Like hte bearing and bore are cocked a bit. |

| That sucks. Looks like there is a problem with the crank? If the line hone was done incorrectly shouldnt the bearrings be coppered in a striaght line? |

Because the wear is identical I wonder if the line hone wasn't actually done. Crank was turned last time and checked out. I'm the machinist this time. :0). Line bore/hones are done by only a few places so it will be farm out but to a different place.
Alot of times the bearings do t wear completely even. I put new bearings in and measured and measured crank and all is round. So having the #1 opposite the rest means line bore. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |
