Hey all, So my trany has been slow to shift for a while but this weekend it has really started slipping BAD. I would be inclined to run it till its dead and then try and fix it but with my 2300 mile drive coming up i definately need this fixed ASAP.
also, what 700r4's can i get to swap in? do blazers, v6's, ect have different gearing/ weaker internals?
does anyone:
have any 700r4's around that are in good shape
can help me rebuild one
know of a trustworthy shop that will do it without breaking my wallet
thanks,

Any 700R4 will break the wallet. It's just how it is.
You need the F-Body stuff because of the torque arm mount. It might be just a tail change but not 100% sure. I think the S-Trucks are a different length.
Guts are the same.
If you're getting another one, get one '87 and up. They are more up to date and a bit stronger. Brandon knows more. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

if you have a V8..... a V6 700r4 will NOT fit, and if you have a V6... a V8 700r4 will not fit...they have different bellhousings
for my 700r4 it was 895 for the tranny, 300 for removal and installation and another 200 for the shift kit...that was at central transmission in kent |

In F-body land yes.
However a 700R4 from a 4.3L Blazer/Jimmy has the same bolt pattern. And the guts interchange. I had my rebuilt '85 IROC 700R4 trans guts swapped into a 4.3L 4x4 '89 Jimmy case cause the Jimmy's blew up and I had the 700 laying around. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

lmao... Jake, did you e-mail me this morning?
If that was you, I still have both trannies, and one converter (gave the other one to Jay). They're yours free. You can come pick them up in Tacoma or in Spanaway, or I can meet you someplace. |

Update.
So i think i'll be pulling my tranny on sunday and bringing it in to a guy in Yelm for a rebuild next week.
His name is Bob from AutoTrans if anyone has heard of him before let me know. But he offered to do the whole rebuild, shift kit, hardened sunshell, corvette servo, and higher stall torque converter for around $900.
Any tips for pulling this thing? I've never pulled a trans before without pulling the entire engine. Thanks for the help guys

Use lots of extsnions. Wobble extensions. You can get them from shucks for like 12:00 for a set of three. Plus a good amount of regular extensions.
Get a set of universal metric sockets. There is one bolt that is a bear on the drivers side. Shucks has them also.
I normally tilt the trans down. then run sock with estension almost to the end of the trans. Makes it esay and you ahve some room to work.
That all the pointers that i ahve have pulled a few and did three trans swap since june. All on the same car.
Doing the wifes trans probably next weekend. V8 also _________________ kurfbird

I don't know that I'd want to drive 2000 miles on a tranny with unknown history, even if I got it from a trustworthy crewbie.
just sayin' _________________

my thoughts exactly Chris.
If I was just farting around WA area i'd be all over band-aiding it but the fact that i have to climb the cascades, rockies, and cross the texas-new mexico desert says buck up the cash and do it right.
The last thing i want is to be stuck somewhere 100 miles from anywhere and get raped by some tranny shop because i no longer have options.

I don't remember but were you running a large cap HEI? Make sure if you tilt the trans down to watch the cap-to-firewall clearance. And kurf said it right, a crap load of extensions from the back side worked best for me. I think the very top two bolts I got with a stubby wrench from the top when I pulled the harness up out of the way. _________________

| you could get a tremec tko 500 or 600 great trans after its broken in...i put mine in 2 days before i drove 1500 miles...no probs with it at all...you would need to get a clutch pedal and all the stuff that goes with it to hook it all up... |

| The small cap can crunch too. Your best bet is to remove it with the wires still attached, and pull it forward. Remove the rotor as well. |

might just want to remove the dizzy altogether.
I've always taken the starter out, and put a jack stand on the flange for the starter to keep the dizzy safe, but I'm a stick, so the trans itself is smaller, and I have a removable bellhousing, so I don't need as much tilt to get it out. _________________

Or do a T5 and spend the other $2500 building some power to beat on it. |

| t5 will not be able to handle the power of a built motor. even my mild truck replacement block from gm goodwrench burnt up my t5. thats why when the 350tpi came out they were in auto only. |
