As soon as I find a shop to install them and afford to have them do it Laughing

I picked this up from Dave (dlp) wile I was at his place picking up Skyler's exhaust parts. It's a 3.73 ring & pinion set by Precision Gear, brand new in the box. Dave said he's had it for quite a while and never installed it because he went a different direction.

Also need to change the driven gear in the tranny for the speedo. Since I'm still running the driven gear for the old 3.08 rear, this would make my indicated speed 18% higher than actual - 85mph indicated for approximately 70mph actual.

Theres at least 2 of us who do this for a living Al. It's possible we could work a weekend install. Especially if you're not in a rush.

Pleeeeaaase Very Happy

I could even use the trip home for most of the recommended break in. Anybody have a T-5 driven gear to work with a 3.73??

Maybe something could be worked out. I'd like to find a better carrier for it though, but I suppose that could be installed later.

Eaton Posi is your friend. Not cheap, but yeah it's awesome.

I'm down for a rear end re-build. I've got some cyl heads in tacoma that could use a pickup lol Laughing

26 or 28 spline?

If you've got 3.08 in there now, I think you need a new carrier anyway. It's 3.23 and up use the same and 3.08 and down use the same.

26 spline true trac: http://www.ringpinion.com/ProductDetails.aspx?ProdID=972

28 spline true trac: http://www.ringpinion.com/ProductDetails.aspx?ProdID=1185

It's like the zexel differential. No posi fluid needed.

Or the standard Eaton clutch posi (way better than the auburn)

26:http://www.ringpinion.com/ProductDetails.aspx?ProdID=1062
28: http://www.ringpinion.com/ProductDetails.aspx?ProdID=1063

Thanks for the info Paul, I think Eaton is the way to go when I have the funds. My current gear is a 3.23, but the speedo gear is for the old 3.08 drum rear that used to be on the car. Does anything special need to be done to change the carrier at a later date?

Chris, I may take you up on that driven gear.

Changing the carrier is nearly like setting the whole thing up again. If you plan on changing the carrier later, i'd just save and wait. That way you won't buy bearings twice, or end up with a whining rear.

Nice score Al. I've wanted to ditch my 3.23s for quite sometime but something else always gets in the way. Like a motor...err...

Thanks Brandon. Not really what I wanted to hear, but that's how it goes Laughing Time to start saving for the carrier and maybe some nice 28 spline axles - looks like the holiday bonus (if we get one) is spent Laughing

Guys, tell me this isn't an Eaton, the seller says it is (Eaton Gov-Lock), and looks like all the others on e-Bay, except for the ones $400 or more

Except for the shape of the window, the carrier I have looks more like this Eaton (which Paul referenced) than the one above.

The first picture is technically an Eaton. It's a production "posi" that went into trucks. Some S-10s and stuff got em too.

They are called "Gov-lock" and also known as the "grenade posi"

The big weight you see in the middle is centrifical. If the tires spin fast enough it locks the axles together... violently. Hence the Grenade. With power and lots of wheel spin, BOOOM. Stay the hell away from those.

You want a gear based posi like the zexel and eaton/detroit true trac or you want a clutch posi like the set of eaton's I referenced.

If you're going axles you might just be better off buying them. $300 for a pair of 28s that are better than stock. Also look into an aluminum rear support girdle with bearing pre-load. It's a must IMHO.

Fully built these rears are only good for about 280 HP with slicks and a stick.... 320ish with an auto and slicks.

IMHO 400 easy with street tires. Just can't get the traction to hurt em.

That type of HP is a bit far away to be realistic for me, so I won't be hurting the thing for a while. Great info, now I have an idea what to look for. I was already scoping out axles by Moser, Superior and Alloy USA. I've thought about the diff cover too.

After reading this again, I thought of something else when you swap in your R&P and carrier.

If your trans is the original one for the car, your drive gear on the output of the trans might need to be changed too.

FYI, the driven gear I have is Red and has 22 teeth.

As far as I know, the drive and driven gears are original to the car - for the 3.08 rear end gear. I've never pulled the driven gear to look at it or to count the teeth. I have read somewhere over on TGO that 3.08 T5 cars have a 9 tooth drive gear - just hearsay

I found this calculator

http://www.5speedtransmissions.com/calculators.html

from this thread

http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/transmissions-drivetrain/436006-t-5-drive-driven.html

If my setup is still stock, I supposedly have a 9 tooth drive gear and either 21 or 22 tooth driven gear (comes up 21.5 with original tire size). I can't stay with the 9 tooth drive gear if that's what I have, driven gears don't have enough teeth - I probably need to change the drive gear to 7 tooth and, maybe the driven gear to 20 or 21 (20.5 with current tire size).

I may get flamed for this, and it is only my opinion, the money spent on a girdle for a 7.5 10 bolt is better spent on anything else. I don't think the ring and pinion can hold enough power to need a $150 girdle. If you can find someone to weld the axle tubes, use a solid bearing spacer, and go to 28 spline axles the rear end will be fine for a street car making decent power.

After a few of weeks of stuffing the savings account, I finally have enough to buy the carrier for the ring & pinion.

This came via Brown today....Very Happy

Now the process starts over for a set of nice 28 spline axles and possibly an install kit Very Happy
