so my friend has a 92 RS with the 3.1L. we found out that his fuel pump is bad...so he was quoted at a 530$ fix. i was like screw that lets do it ourselves...so before i get myself into a big mess. how difficult is it to replace a fuel pump in a 3rd gen?

Step one: Disconnect Negative battery cable. Laughing

Drop axle, pull tank (fun w/ the fixed fill tube), replace pump.

Installation is the reverse.

don't be fooled, its not an "easy" one to do. But you can do it! its just a time consuming process.

Just as Ian said. Dropping the rear axle makes it much easier to get it out. Also, its much easier when the tank is empty Embarassed

read this:

the springs come right out if you pull the shocks off and drop the axle. Be sure to disconnect the brake hardline bracket from the chassis first too.

Alright, the last guy to own my car was lazy and cheated in a creative way

fold the back seat forward and pull up the carpet, cut out a patch of the exposed metal (not with a torch) ... and you should be looking at your fuel lines and the gas tank lid under which lies your fuel pump.

With that said it's probably better that you do it the right way as mentioned previously, it just saved me a lot of time.

If a sealed trap door was made I see no problem with cutting a hole.

Lots of rigs have sealed doors. Lots don't.

It's the hacked up sawzall to hell stuff that gets truely frowned upon!

heh, good point, I don't know what he used to cut it out without damaging the tank. I guess if your more careful then I, more options would open up to you.

I know it can be done with a sawzall and/or cutoff wheel if you're careful.

Before I junked my old 84 Sport coupe, I cut that whole section out for rod so he could repair his car because his had been cut up.

yah, I think carefully with a wheel would work well, I just imagine me destroying my back end of poor betsy with a sawzall.
