Got my roommates 88 firebird going this weekend. 305 5sp. His distributor grenaded earlier this winter so we got one of those and then I discovered his wires have been on wrong for the last year. Quick couple of changes and off we go for a test drive. 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 has been permanently engrained into my brain. I brought the camaro out just so I could drive it again.

I wasn't expecting him to try to pass me. Right where the 35mph goes to 50mph he jumps up beside me. I goose it to keep up and we both lay off as we line up. Must have been going about 40mph.

Off we go....

I was in 2nd gear when I let the hammer fall. At first I only barely pulled on him. I mean BARELY. Of course, there was a huge plume of tire smoke coming from behind me. I could hear him laughing cause we had the windows down. Speed and load concided and the tranny changed to 3rd. The car pulled sideways at what have must have been 50mph and I was off like a rocket! (still sideways, but going straight) I pulled so hard on him I thought he had given up. I confirmed at the end of the strip he hadn't and stayed wide open. He knew I was roasting the tires through the entire race and couldn't help but laugh.

I'm really thinking about it. I need to get the engine temp under control though. I think it's getting too hot but I can't be certain. I'm still running the stock V6 radiator. Lol, maybe I'll trailer it down.....

If you're using the 2.8 V6 radiator, the V8 radiator isn't that much bigger. The 3.1 has the same radiator as the V8. Big block though probably needs more cooling, maybe get one with another core in it.

correct on the 3.1/v8 rad is the same. Dunno if it was that way on the 2.8's.

They added dual fans on the 350, but I think the 305 was still single fan?

Maybe upgrade to the dual fan setup. Then 2 diff temp fan sensor/triggers in that block. I have the colder hypertech one that is no use to me.

Is single core standard? Mine is dual core. I was going to also extend the shroud of the fan to meet up with the radiator. Mine is an inch away from the core and I'm sure improving that clearance will help draw more air through it. That and removing the grill so the air can come straight in.

For some reason the guage goes up to 240*. I don't really believe it though cause I'm not boiling over when I drive and it's clearly not overheating. I may have grabbed the wrong sensor or have a bad ground somewhere

I believe all the TPI 305's were dual after 86.

TBI, and 86/87 LG4's were single.

V6 Rad isn't much smaller really. If you have proper shrouding (shroud an inch away really isn't doing anything.), large enough fan you should be okay.

Yes a BBC does take more cooling than a SBC but it's not by much. Alot of hotrod rads are same SBC/BBC.

You've got to keep in mine too, even with a hole in the hood, the BBC puts out more heat typcially and there is much less ambient air under the hood. If your hood has the weather stripping at the back, I'd take it out.

I second Paul's comment on the weather striping. Make sure the rad is clean (fins and internally), and toss a 180 stat in with the fans wired on a lower temp switch (or manual). And yes, you need to bring it down next weekend. I want to see it! Very Happy
