I got this postcard in the mail today. It says my auto warranty is expiring and that I should purchase their "extended" warranty. I don't know where they get their information, but the warranty on my 92 expired in early 1998, 3 months after I bought it, and the 89 never had one as long as I've had it.
The postcard...

It's not going to happen, but I wonder how much of my money they want me to hand over to them for this scam Confused

Why not call and find out? Interesting to see what they will say when you tell them your car is 20 years old Wink

I'd block my phone# when I called them though.

I'm sure its not a scam per se, but the truth is in the print. "call now to recieve $250 off"
OK so how much does it cost then if they can chip 250 off and still make money?? I'm sure they are not giving 50% off so what is it 1000. thats pretty steep. And it appears that they will only cover a car up to ten years old, that leaves me and my 91 out.
So High price tag and only covering cars that are, in some cases, still under warranty. 10 year 100,000 mile warranties are not unheard of these days. seems the only way they will attract customers is through mass mailings.

I know it's all a scam, there was a story on the news about this type of extended warranties not long ago.

How do you extend a nonexistent warranty???

I get the same post cards and I have 5 years left on my warranty. Laughing It's not a scam but it is unethical advertisement IMO.

Speaking of scams, do you remember a few months ago when I said some person used my truck ad on Craigslist to place their own ad? Well, they did eventually scam somebody out of nearly $5000 and that person contacted me after tracing the license plates in the pictures. The victim even booked out my truck and knew it was worth $21K before sending the money. Rolling Eyes Don't know what was going through his head but it probably had something to do with greedy little thoughts of personal gain.

Just removing interference just to access the alternator might cost that much on some of the newer cars. Ours are pretty easy, two or three bolts and they're off.

I remember in the early 90s when a replacement alternator for a geo metro was $500. Just for a rebuilt You explain that to a typical geo owner.

I've gotten the postcards. Never the phone calls.

I actually bought a "extended warrenty" when I bought my 2001 camaro in 2004. Nothing quite this shady though. Dealer offered it.

Never again. total waste of $1400. Never had to use it, and they wouldn't cover basic maintainance.

The GM extended warranty is NOT bumper to bumper like the original--unless you pay for the premium version. I believe the premium also includes basic maintenance--I know for sure Cadillac offers this, but not sure if you can get it for "lesser" models. GM has a scaled extended warranty--you basically can get several versions depending on what you want. Most sales people don't usually explain this very well--which is dumb on their part as most warranties bank more money for the salesperson than the actual car sale does.

My dad had the extended on his Chevy Venture--and was glad for it when the AWD system had issues, he needed to replace the crappy front hubs that GM builds (why cant a car company thats been in busness over 100 years build a decent hub?)--I know technically they come fom American Axle--still.

The alternator in the 89 went out last weekend when I was on the wrong side of the water with no tools in the car. Alternator by itself (new from NAPA) was $225, which is on par since the one in the 92 cost me $180 to have rewound to output 140 amp. Add that to the labor and it was a healthy bit of change, but nowhere near the $850 estimate on that extended warranty postcard ad.
