Driver side done! I had to cut the crossmember but I welded a piece to fill the hole back in, kinda. It should work. Now I get to start the passenger side which should be the bigger pain.

Glad to see you making progress Travis!

(You need to clean that poor motor up though!)

Laughing Clean it? It would rust if I took all the dirt off it! I'll start on cleaning it up once it's healthy enough to run in its new home.

k, i have a problem that needs advice. First off, sorry about the order the pictures uploaded. You can see that both sides are way too low. About 3" lower than the front subframes. So I need to cut that out. I drew a line on one of the headers to split the difference of the two angles. This makes it pretty perpendicular. I was going to cut there on the tape, shorten it up, and weld it back together.

Does anyone think I should do it another way? The headers are too long so I'm going to cut first and then check for posts later. Any suggestions would be great.

It's going to be like choping a top.

In your case there, you should be able to cut out the length needed, then cut pie shapes out to bend the pipes to where they need to go.

cut a little at a time. Easier to cut more then have to add back.

Oh man. So in an attempt to get this done, I'm converting my long tubes to shorties. There simply isn't enough room under there for the big block and long tubes. I'm choosing to use a stock routing for the exhaust too. I know it's not ideal but it works better than not at all. Some day I'll make it better, just not now. I'll keep the 3" dumps to a single 4" exhaust. Should sound sick.

Here's the first runner! The hardest part seems to be done. Everything lines up, collector fits down by the starter just fine with room for stock y-pipe routing. Runners 1, 3, and 5 are next!

Didn't you already do the drivers side?

Ya, the drivers side fit's just fine. I just need to shorten it a little so it doesn't hit the ground and maybe turn it a little so it lines up to the stock routing.

Yeay! Runner 5 is done! Clears the spark plug boot too! I don't think I'll be able to get the plug out without taking the headers off though Sad Oh well, it willl run at least.

Does anyone have any suggestions on welding thinwall stuff? What seems to be working is keeping the voltage all the way down, wire feed half way, and then bead fast. Going slow burns through every time.

start and stop alot. Works good on thin material once you learn to tell when it is about to melt through.

thanks man, I was doing that but I thought I was doing something wrong to make it work. Good to know I'm not crazy. If anyone asks, yes I can weld, no I can't weld well.

Just sat everything down tonight to see how much room I have to route the exhaust. It is 3" to the lowest point (my new angle iron tranny crossmember) and 3.5" to the front of the tranny pan. Think that is too low? Laughing It looks good it's just a little too low. Once the exhaust is up I might raise it.

http://fbody.beater.org/

Decent collection of exhaust routings on the link above. Thought I would share since I'm still a little unsure as to how to route my exhaust from the driver side over to the stock routing provisions. The motor oil pan reaches a little bit further so the exhaust can't follow the exact crossover. I'm going to try to fit it directly under the torque converter inspection plate. I sure hope there is enough room. My car is excessively low...

Do you have enough room to run a trans xmember with humps?

I think I do. Is that okay to run the crossmember like that? I don't think i have enough room since I have an automatic. That would route the exhaust directly beside the shifter linkage. I'll take a picture like you posted of what I have so far.

You may not considering how wide the trans pan is on your auto. I route my exhaust exactly like that but I've got a narrow (comparatively) t56.

I was going to take multiple pictures but this pretty much sums it all up! I need to shorten the driver side collector so I can run it under the inspection cover but what do you all think so far?
