Was thinking about my MSD box today, and reliazed that the last time I reconnected the battery, I didn't put the ground for the MSD box on.

But my car still runs, and pretty strong. Reconnected it and didn't notice any difference.

Is the box itself self grounding through the screws into the firewall????

WEIRD.
Shocked

It was grounded through your tounge. I told you not to lick it man, but do ya listen to me? nooo. Very Happy

Actually, I'm not sure what happened there. It should have created problems if it wasn't grounded, so it almost has to be grounded somehow.

Yes. That's what is happening. Most of the "black wire" grounds are pretty superfluous, but it will assure you of a good ground in case the screws loosen, or there is too much dirt/grease in between the box and the fender/firewall/whatever.

All the test equipment I design/build have redundant grounds, especially the high voltage (20kV - 30 kV) stuff.

You have that grounded to your battery paul? Usually thats a good idea but with the msd box it really should be grounded to the motor. Spark energy is returning to the msd, at least some of it.

Would the big ground battery lead that goes to the motor be a better ground for it? They'd still be touching each other... IE motor has big wire to battery ground, ground wire on battery?

Is the positive on the battery okay?

I just followed the MSD instructions when I installed it Embarassed
