So I work at an auto parts store in customer service, I get my fair share of know-it-alls, people in a hurry, and the pretty ladies who need help installing light bulbs
But yesterday I was helping a guy (who's been in the same high-school auto shop as me) pick out a battery for his car, and he was SHOCKED to see me touch both terminals on a battery without being electricuted.
Just thought I'd share, what made this worse was that this guy is a third-gen owner! _________________

Nice.
So you know about the people that need.... say a water pump for a small block chevy. you ask what year? and you get "It don't matter!" so you pick a random one. Then you get "Thats not it! Do you know what your doing at all?" _________________

We basically sell stuff on the cheap. Ive found that just getting the job done (tune-ups, brake jobs, fluid changes) were consistantly lower.
So hense I get alot of Cheap-@$$'s at my work lol we carry some stuff like edelbrock carbs etc. but we rarely sell them... _________________

I use to work in a tire shop, and we would have old people come in and ask for a "50 series tire". "Ok, what rim and what width?" "I just told you, a 50 series". "Yes sir, but that is the sidewall, not width".
Some would get pissed and leave. Some I would have to pull out the tire sizing chart and explain to them how tires are sized.
Then of course, the ladys that dont even know what year or motor the car has. Had one lady didnt even know what kinda car she drove. _________________ 2008 GMC Z71

That's actually totally understandable. Back in their day they didn't use metric tire dimensions, or use the metric system for much of anything. Tires were rated like F50x15. |

isaw this comedian one time tralking about his parts store job
Quote: |
ME:so a guy comes in and tosses some bent hunk of metal on the counter
HIM: need one a dem
ME: whats it off of?
HIM: truck
ME: white kind of truck?
HIM:pickup
ME what kind of pickup?
HIM: red
ME: sir, i need to..
HIM: look dummy, one of these for a red pickup truck, what is you stupid or somethin? |
had a funny experiance in napa once, i am bsing with my friend who worked there after getting some stuff, and all the other parts guys are looking at a plug wire kit, finally one asks my buddy "dude did we get the wrong thing, there are only two". they had ordered a spark plug wire kit for a car with an inline 4cyl engine, and only received two plug wires. so i ask them what year, they say 2004, so then i explained to them how a "wasted spark" ignition system works... and that two coils plug directly into two of the spark plug and do not need wires, only the other two. even the owner of the car had no idea. |

If you're going to order parts and do the work yourself you better know just a little about what your doing. If the parts guys order me the wrong part I don't hold it against them. How should they know! They aren't mechanics nor fricken genious's! I do wish they had engine lookups as well as car lookups. That way I can go in and get a sensor for a GA16DE, M52TUB25, L31, or whatever else.[/quote] |

I absolutely HATED working the retail side of Schmuck's. I swear to holy hell that Tacompton has the stupidest of stupid working on their cars.
It was awful. One guy brought in a metal box that had a Toyota part number on it from some 80's Corolla. He said it was bad and prevented the car from running. I humored the guy when I couldn't find any ecm for it. I called Toyota and asked if they could cross the number. Sure enough they could. I had fun telling that cocky SOB that if his stereo amplifier prevented his car from running, he had other issues at hand.
I can't count the number of times I tried prying info from people that thought they were replacing the correct part. _________________

Oh! another great story that skyler reminded me of..
A hispanic guy comes in and goes toward the last (oil) isle.
I ask if he needs any help, he looks at me and smiles, says "yes" under his breath and keeps walking... (at this point, I can tell he doesn't speak much english.)
but anyway I just lean on the counter a bit, when he comes up to check out, he's got some 10W-30 castrol and says "I need de Bujias." (spainish for spark plugs.) I say ok and jump on the parts computer.
He says "Ford, peek-up, 1987." I got to a point where I had to ask 1/2, 3/4, 1 ton... He told me it was a 1 ton, and then for some reason I felt the need to ask if it was a deisel...
he says "Yes, deisel." Nodding.
I then asked if he needed glow-plugs, but no he started pointing to the Accel plugs we have on display
So I kept trying to explain "No deisel bujias..." I even showed him a glow-plug. Then I think he tried to ask you gap it!
So he didn't get any plugs, and I couldn't talk him outta buying that castrol oil either...
He ended up coming back later with a buddy and returning the oil in favor of some Delo.. _________________
