I read a post a couple of months back on CamaroZ28 about a warranty statement from GM. GM stated that the oils from air filters can 'gum up' the MAF sensor (the metal strand the detects the amount of air going to the TB).

I know many folks who have been using K&N's for years, is this an overstatement from GM to get out of warranties for newer cars or could it happen Question

it is not new news that those filters do not filter as well as a paper element.

i have also seen enough people with MAFs that have gone bad on the NEW MAFs to wonder. BUT, there are alot of people with thirdgens, who have run them for years without issues with the older MAFs in our cars.

i guess the real question comes in if the truely give you a performance gain. and if it is worth it to chance your MAF. i have seen data that says a paper element flows plenty of air for a pretty hot engine, when it is clean.

Though I think that if you follow K&N's directions you shouldn't have to worry about anything. They don't tell you to put the filter on while it's wet or sop it down so bad it drips hours later.

It would take sime pretty good suction to suck oil off something like that.... I would think.

K&N warns you on the cleaning kit to watch how much oil you apply to the filter. If you overdo it you can hurt the maf. But if its done right you shouldnt have a problem.

i've noticed a lot of people actually don't let the filter soak and dry ... they just re-oil and toss the thing back in.

if you follow the steps properly, there shouldn't be any problem at all.

I still maintain that a carbed car will still probably benefit more from a k&n filter + filter top than any fuel injected car would with the other k&n filters.

but thats me.
