Shocked

Glad you made it out decently ok. I'm still hazy as to how you blew air across the bulb....something about the rock chip?

Best wishes for your health,

Dylan

i used compressed air to suck out the water and place tape to prevent more water to enter. I was cheap and apparently a stupid idea.

Shocked

Wow. Never heard of that Bigdaddy and sorry to hear about the damage done. All things considered I am glad that there wasn't more damage done.

Anyone know why/how this happened?

wow!
that's crazy! Shocked

i'm glad you're ok though. even though you now have some permanet damage to your hand, if you'd had been sitting or whatever in a different spot, it could have been worse.
i'd like to see if the mythbusters take it on.

holy shizzle man, you're lucky to have that thumb still attached at all... be thankful it was just some nerves...

though, I can't imagine shifting will be easy ... but on the plus side if you're working on the car and scrap that side of your hand up you won't feel it too much... Embarassed

best of luck on healing

"i used an air hose from my compressor to blow across the hole to suck out the water and BooOMm!!! "

Sounds like you blew air into the hole, and since it was full of water (does not compress) there was very little air space, and it only took a small amount to break it.

The hole already comprimised the strength of the glass pane.

A glass chip like the one you have is kinda like a bulllet wound, entry is small, exit is much larger, so no matter what direction you blew across the hole, it would always catch the air and direct it inside the lamp.

My brother showed me when I was a kid that if you toss a light bulb in the burn barrel and spit on it, it will explode. Well I tried it and the exploding glass shard cut me 1/2" above my left eye, I almost lost one.

Sorry bout your injury and wish you a speedy recovery.

Wow man, thats pretty crazy. Any idea as to "why" this happened? The only thing I can think of is maybe the headlight housing isn't designed to handle vacuum, only pressure? So when you blew across the hole the pressure dropped causing the housing to implode. Or did it explode? Flouresent bulbs and normal light bulbs are under a vacuum, so when you break them the make a "pop" sound and the shardes don't go to far away. Does this sound like what happened to you?

I'm sorry to see that you were hurt by this. It looks bad! What exactly is mythical about this, though? Compressed air into or across a hole in a closed vesicle (although the water has little to do with it) will cause a pressure differential. If the surrounding material is weak or weakened, the pressure will cause this to occur. If you blew compressed air into or across the opening of a balloon, would it expand (or contract, depending on the direction of the differential)? Give it a shot...

There's no real myth here, unless this is something you've heard of before with some surrounding mystery. And if that's the case, you just did the Mythbusters' work for them! Confirmed!

Again, sorry to see that kind of damage to your thumb. Like others have said, though, it could have been worse. A numb thumb is better than an absent eye!

My observation was that the water took up air space so it didnt take as long for the pressure to build up to the break point, thats all.

For some reason I imagined the light being almost full of water, perhaps that wasnt the case.

If indeed the force applied was a vacume, it would have imploded, and any water inside would have absorbed some of the energy.

Hang in there BigDaddy!

it may have been just the air flowing over the surface of the glass, that would cause a low pressure zone across the surface of the glass, while the non-moving air on the underside of the glass would be high pressure, causing it to exploid.
