My nephew brought one of these over at Christmas (a gift from his dad - my brother) since he was always calling for directions. Thought it was neat and found a used one in new condition on Amazon. A little GPS unit with a 3 1/2" touch screen. Seems every bit as good as a Garmin or Magellan unit, but without the price, comes fully loaded and ready to go out of the box. It was fun to use on the way to work and back today. I paid $220 plus shipping, Circuit City has them for $300.
And one attached to the windshield
Since my cig lighter doesn't work, I'm going to wire a pigtail one in somewhere behind the dash and run the cord up in front between the dash and windshield. I can't cut the cord because this one steps the voltage down from 12V to 5V to power the unit's USB port.

Cool device.
Why not fix the cig lighter instead of wiring in a pigtail? Seems like the more flexible solution to me, and would probably take the same amount of time. |

That's the way I was going to do it anyway. Much neater appearance without the cord dangling from the dash and cig lighter. Also going to rout the audio patch cord the same way to the aux input in back of my head unit. |

That is pretty nice Al. Great price. I had flirted with picking up one of the portable nav systems but all of the prices I saw were up in the $500-$600 range.
So you can just unplug that unit and use it in any vehicle right?

Yeah, that's possible. Has its own internal battery so it's ideal for hiking, biking, etc. In my case, I can remove the GPS receiver, but not the wiring. Already wired a pigtailed aux power plug under the dashpad to a 12V ignition source so it will shut off with the car.

This one also doubles as an MP3 player. MP3's can be loaded to internal flash or to external SD card.
While playing around with it yesterday, I inadvertently removed all the maps it came preloaded with. Took me a couple of hours to figure out the map transfer from my computer (maps are on a supplied DVD) to GPS through the USB interface (the documentation sucks). |
