Evil or Very Mad

Thought it would be a great idea to put in my 170 deg thermostat. As I was removing one of the housing bolts I knew it was gonna go so I just snapped it off anyway.

So after pulling everthing off and out of the way I tried to extract the stud, now that broke Bashy Bashy

So I guess I will just try to drill that one out and go to bigger size ?

Don

Are you using the funky reverse threaded extractor? If you are go to an autoparts store and get the bolt extractors that are 4 sided. You drill a hole and pound the extrator in, and turn it out with a wrench.

Hard to explain but Brandon told me about them and they are the best thing ever for bolt removal!

So you have the end of the easy-out stuck in the bolt? If so hopefully it really is a cheezy tool and not hardened well. A good hardened easy-out will take either a cobalt bit or a torch to get out.

Im really hosed. Even a cobalt bit wont cut into it. The stud and the broke off extractor might as well be welded in.

I need something that can cut tool steel. Im using a cordless drill maybe I need a high speed one.

Yank the intake manifold off and replace it, thats the next step. I could just scream.

Will this fit a 305 ?

Yes.

For the extractor, I have no words of wisdom other than I'm sure a machine shop can help ya! Laughing

Good luck Don!

Do you have access to any kind of welding torch? When I get something really hard like a tap broke off, I sometimes will take a torch with a fine tip to it. Theres 2 methods, one is to actually use a cutting tip and blow the metal out. This doesnt always work cause you can cut the surrounding metal to. The second method is to heat the offending piece of metal up till its cherry red then let it cool by itself. That will sometimes take the temper out of the metal enough that you can drill it.

Another thing you can try is to make a very small chisel. I usually use an old broken punch and cut a chisel face into it. Then you can either use the chisel to try and turn the piece of metal out, or if its really hard it will be brittle and you can break it into small pieces.

With any of these methods you may need to install a thread repair when you're done. Especially being the first time you've tried it. With some experience you can get where you can remove the pieces without damaging the original threads.

Also with a torch if you let the stuck bolt cool, then heat the manifold around it you can sometimes get the bolt to turn.

Want an early 70's Corvette intake? Very Happy
It's iron, but flows really nicely!

No Thanks PTA ! I got it out yesterday.

Epilog:

After finding a plethora of carbide bits at Boeing Surplus for dirt cheap I was able to drill out the 1st extractor.

I attempted to use the square type extractor, that twisted off too.

Not to fret, I got out my super duty bits and harry reamed that out too. Bought a tap and what was once a 3/8" hole is now a 7/16" one.

Sweet! Good bits are awesome. I've broken my share of easy outs too, both kinds. I've been seeing lots of news about the boeing surplus store. I'd like to go through there someday.

I was there once. Got this here 17" Viewsonic monitor for $25! Works like a charm. Didn't see any tools there, but I guess I wasn't looking at the time.
