So i was talking to a guy about heads on sbc's and he was telling me they came with 2 basic heads. there is the 202 head (the good ones) and the 196 heads(i think it was that) Embarassed anyways i snapped a few pics of mine in hopes to figure out whati have without taking the valve covers off.

He's talking about the old way that they ID'ed heads, intake valve size. 2.02 and it should be 1.94's. You need the casting number under the valvecover and look it up on mortec.com. Most of the old popular heads with 64cc chambers won't work on our cars since they lack the acc. bolt holes on the ends of them.

There are MANY different heads. You can also take small chamber small valve heads and put larger valves in them. IMHO Unless you take the time to port a factory head, I'd go with Vortecs.

Jake,

I'm going to echo basically what paul and Rod said........there are TONS of castings for heads with 1.94/1.50 and the 2.02/1.60 heads. They can range from 64cc to 76cc.....earlier heads didn't have accessory bolt holes, because power steering mounted differently or wasn't standard, and the alternator bracketry was different. If you're intrested in more, I have a Chevy Small Block book that I use for reference that I woudn't mind loaning to you at the next gathering.

Another old way they identified the heads was that is they had one hump on the side they were two barrel heads and if they had double humps they were four barrel heads but this still isn't going to give you any REAL information. The only way your going to really know exactly what heads you have is to do what the other guys were sayin. Get some casting numbers. stock 2.02's are harder to find nowadays.
