|
|
Okay, so I geeked out. I calculated the wheel torque and mph for my auto and the WCT5 that is sitting on the shop floor. This is using the stock sized tire of diameter 25.6 (245/50r16) and 4.11 gears.
WC-T5
2.95---2269.3---34.6
1.94---1492.4---52.6
1.34---1030.8---76.2
1.00----769.3---102.1
0.74---569.2---138.0
Auto
3.06---2353.9---33.4
1.63---1253.9---62.6
1.00---769.3---102.1
0.78---600.0---130.9
0.70---538.5----145.9
Looks like the manual would be faster, not to mention lighter and I wouldn't have an auto. I autocross this car, so do you think I could have a problem shifting or getting it in gear? I'm going to have to swap input shafts and the bellhousing to make it fit my V6 (no biggie right?). _________________ E30

If you auto-x manual is the way to go. I normaly just leave it in 2nd and go, but depending on the car and course, you may need to hit third, here or there.
You also don't have to worry about it downshifting on you mid corner, you pick what gear your in. |

I'm just worried about mis-shifts and bad syncro's. but if I mate a WC T5 to my V6, I think the tranny would whoop on my motor! All 200ft.lbs....
I tried to fix the spacing by the forum engine takes all the tabs and spaces out inbetween words. Grrr... |

I can't answer that one for you, if the syncro's are good, that shouldn't be an issues, and if your right hand / left foot cordination is good, mis-shifts shouldn't be an issue. I guess that part is a matter of how much you trust yourself as a driver. |

| but a T5 would be faster tho huh? Lighter, better gearing, and more power transfer to the wheels? |

Its hard to say, it may not launch as well, and it doesn't have the same torque multipication as a torque converter and auto.
For auto-x use, I think a manual is better, as you can feather the clutch, and manualy pick the gear you are in. It SHOULD be faster around an auto-x course, with a good driver. Go with what YOU want. In auto-x, usualy the driver is the weak link of the car. Concentrate on making yourself faster, before you worry about making the car faster.

Wise words, I auto crossed last summer in my 87 acura integra with a 5 spd and because i was a decent driver I was able to woop up on some much faster cars because I was a better driver then them. Practice lots and just have fun with it. I would say go with the manual for auto cross though.

Manual=
I don't know about the WCT5's Gear ratio between first and second, but I THINK that with the earlier ones the V6 got a 3.27:1 and the V8's got a 2.95:1. I seem to remember reading that somewhere....but maybe I"m just getting numbers confused.
I'm curious if the T-5 on my 2001 is a 14 spline V6 transmission like the ones on the 60 degree V6's or if its something different because my 3.8 is a Buick motor. I suppose I could take it out and find out....but I dont feel like doing that.... _________________

| I heard that too, the V6 T-5's are different than the V8 T-5's. The numbers above are for a V8 T-5. I really don't know why I'm putting it in, other than the fact that I can't find a V6 T-5 and I have a WC T-5 sitting here. I would imagine that the Buick V6 is way different than the chevy's. I've never heard of anyone putting a chevy 700r4 on a 3.8 so I know the bellhousings are different, probably the splines too. |

I don't really know. I know they used both a T-5 and a 4L60-E on later base model camaros. Mine's a Gen II 3.8L which uses DIS (Uses Coil packs) instead of having a distributor or an opti-spark like distributor.
Your WCT5 is a V8 transmission?
I see V6 transmissions in the Boneyard all the time still in the cars..... _________________

the junkyards up here suck. I'm from bremerton and I miss the old Eastside Auto. You could find anything there and it was cheap. Ahh the good old days....
but ya, the transmissions were the same V6-V8 as far as I know, exept the bellhousings and that 1st gear. The only cool T-5 was the World Class, which was rated for 50 more hp and tq (beefier internals).
I'm amazed you did the 3.8 swap! are you going to make it a 3.8T???? |

Aaron's right, I'm speaking of the 4th gen. Both my 3rd gen's are V8's in need of some help...but any money that I have is going to school for now. _________________
