Where do you guys reccomend lifting the engine from?

My buddies and I were trying to figure it out, but the only engines they are familiar with are inline 5's (audi boys)

We tried just going around the manifold and such, but the engine kept lifting unevenly.

Any suggestions or pictures on how to get it out?

when i did mine it came out uneven. so i just went with it and took it out.maybe try and put the hook into a link on the chain closer to the back of the motor to even out the weight.

They make life ALOT easier.

Otherwise I've done it two ways:

#1 tried and true... run one bolt through the chain through an accessory bolt hole on the front of one head, and the other end of the chain into the opposite head on the backside. Comes out and goes in crooked but it seems to work.

#2 Not sure how safe this is or if its bad or not: One bolt through one of the center exhaust manifold holes on the head, and same on the opposite head. I did this with a tranny installed already and it kept the motor centered and tilted forward and backward real easy. Pick the hole that best centers the weight of the engine

Hmm.. well since engine tilt seems fairly normal I guess we will just go with it.

There is 4 of us all together, and we can use a little brawn to get it where we need.

Thanks for telling me about that engine tilter, I will have to check it out

Also... What is an estimated weight of the engine and tranny?

Engine and trans I'm going to guess around 1200lbs.

I can tell you with a 305/350 and 700r4 You can take her out real easy if you have someone guiding the tailshaft, putting it in is a different story. You almost NEED the leveler.

Another thing you can do (Found out while reading more about levelers) Put one chain on the 2nd from front intake bolts, and a second chain of equal length on the 2nd from back intake bolts (use longer than the stock intake bolts though) and hook both chains to the hook.

Never needed more than one other person.

Sorry, slightly of topic here, but would it be easier to put headers on while the engine is out, or would that make it too much a pain to put it all back in?

The absolute easiest way to install/remove and engine is with the headers OFF before you pull, and put the engine back in FIRST.

I've done it where i left them attached to the Y and done it where I've left it attached to the block, it's a PITA.

Just take them off.

Paul's estimate on weight is a little high. Dont think even a big block/th400 combo will come close to 1200lbs. Most small blocks are around 500lbs but that varies with the amount of aluminum on the engine, and the # of accessories you leave attached(such as iron exh manifolds). I would guess an automatic should weigh in 150-200lbs. I know i can pack one myself but its not fun.
