ok
My 64 Fairlane has reached 80,500 miles (probably 180,500)
Still runs drivs and works great, but I"m considering giving it a major fluid change/tune-up at 81,000.
Oil/filter will be due for a changing at 81,000.
Temp stays about a 1/4 up on Hot (no actual reading in Degrees Fairenheit) when regular driving. Sometimes creeps up on hotter days when sitting in traffic/drive thru through. Had the car for two years, only put about 8k miles on it, its seen most of its driving through portland traffic, one Treck to the beach and a few trips to Salem/Silverton. Never changed the coolent since I got the car.
Same with the Transmission filter. Did drain most of the old transmission fluid out and put new in, right after I got the thing running again. Transmission has never slipped or had any other problems.
Did put on a new distributor cap and rotor when I got the car, new condenser, and checked the point gap and how dirty the points were when I got the car. All seemed to check out. Has a set of older Champion spark plugs. That I removed, checked the gap and cleaned. Also set timing to 10 degrees BTDC. Thing has always idled smoothly.
If I do all these now at once..when are good intervals to check/replace the following?:
Tune up (Distributor cap, Air cleaner, fuel filter(s) Rotor, Check/replace points, spark plug wires, plugs, check timing, idle/air mixture or fuel richness)
Transmission (filter and fluid, other parts as needed)
Coolent (replace Coolent/water mixture)
Rear end (check oil level, flush or replace....I've usually seen about 36,000mi intervals for this one)
Generally I"ve replaced/repaired as needed, but I've leraned that a little preventative maintainance can save you a lot of trouble later on. I like my fairlane, its served me as a second vehicle very well and would like to hang onto it until its Odometer rolls over again. _________________

This is my humble opinion, and not backed up by anything.
Coolant is flushed every year.
Cap/rotor/plugs changed every couple of years. (plugs probably more like every year)
I know some more modern tranny's and rear ends can go 30K between servicing, but I'm not sure how it works with a car that old.
If your temp is starting to climb at lights, I'd start with a radiator flush. If it was a bad thermostat, it would climb under normal driving, drop back down at lights. The reverse is true with a rad that's starting to slow down. |

Since you still have a points ignition. You'll probably need to do the plugs/points/condensor every year. Distributor caps nearly last forever though. Plugs won't last long because the spark isnt hot enough to keep them burnt clean.
Myself I probably wouldnt have changed the tranny fluid. The original fluid was made with whale oil(all pre 74 trans fluid was) and was great stuff. The new stuff doesnt compare. But now that you have changed it, I'd say every 50k miles or so. |
