well i have looked at all the options on replacing the in tank pump i don't like cutting my new exhaust out and dropping the axel out. so i may have to cut a door from the top in the hatch. if someone could give me so measurements so i could cut a door perfectly to get to the top of the tank. that be great. _________________

Um.... no.....
Do it properly. Sawzall the Pipes before the axle, unbolt the hangers, drop the axle, and remove the tank.
Then bolt everything back up, and have an exhaust shop weld the pipe back intact for $10. |

| Now that I know a tiny bit about the fuel system I'd had no problem running new braided lines and picking up one of the access doors for race cars and going from the top. I'd probably end up dropping the tank down a few inches to not get too close while cutting but it would make any later change a 15 minute job. |

if done right it is not that bad... but... come on. suck it up and devote a day to keeping your unibody intact. sure it takes 8hrs+ (screw you paul, it's not a 2hr job for the rest of us ) but it is the best way.
DEFINATLY cut your exhaust. i did it on my six w/o cutting. it took me almost 30 minutes to wrestle the tank out of the back area around the exhaust. longer to put back in.
one nice tip: when you are removing the 4 rubber hoses that come off the tank there will be a strong temptation to cut them all and replace with new rubber hoses. fine, but one of them is pressure fit at both ands and costs 35$ from the stealership. i uh.. sorta found that out the hardway _________________ 86' firebird (Junked in 2015). 88' GTA (sold in 2020).

You guys gotta realize the pump doesn't just "come up" it's a big L shaped set of metal fuel lines and you have to wiggle and turn the whole assembly to get the pump and float out.
Get a Walbro 255 and you'll never have to worry about it again.
Cutting a hole in the well is just.... back yard. |

That's why I'm talking about running all new lines. Trim the top of the pump assembly back to just above the retainer ring and set it up for fittings right there.
I dropped the tank when I put the walbro in. However, if someone used an actual gasketed access door I'd see it as improving an annoying stock design. |

the sending unit that the soft hoses are atached too is bendable. i was bareley able to maintain shape on my fuel sending line. (good thing it was only a 2.great) be carfull when you are yanking on the 4 hoses down there. also, the two straps that hold the tank in. they are hard to get the tank out around. you will want to bend them. don't. this makes the tank not sit right. other then that it is all pretty strong.
one more tip. you need to drop the rear end, instead of undoing the brake line just remove the hard line retainers along the "frame" and allow the line to flex down. this gives you another foot of drop and you will not have to re-bleed your brakes.
and schedule at least a day for this. i learned all this stuff the hardway. |
