i have heard that to change my fuel filter on my car i need to depressurize the system. is that true and how do i do it?

I don't know, I just jacked my car up - pulled out the old one and put in the new one

The easiest way to relieve the pressure on those cars is to pull the fuse for the fuel pump, start the car, and let it run out of gas. The system will be purged.

After replacing the filter, replace the fuse, and start the car. It will take a few extra seconds because you have to prime the whole fuel line, but it's relatively painless, and less messy this way.

IIRC, the manual also mentions this... even the cheap ass Haynes manual.

I think the only reason it says anything about de-pressurizing is because if you don't you'll just have some gas leaking out of the lines when you do it, nothing a golf tee wouldn't fix if you drop something or need to go hunt for something after pulling the old one ;)

well i have a manual but sort of misplaced it during my time of mourning while replacing my heater core. i need to find it i guess. lol

If its fuel injected there's a shrader valve on the passenger side on the fuel rail. it has a black cap on it, just unscrew and release the presure. Fuel will come out so have a rag handy. After that just make sure everything is off and remove the old, and install the new. If its on a carbed car i dont know, i would go with Paul and run it out of gas. Good luck!

my cap is aluminum colored not black.....eother way is efficient. The problem isnt leaking fuel while you change the filter the problem is the 55 psi initial shot that goes in your eyes if you dont depressurize the system... not a problem for you TBI guys
