|
|
BACKSTORY:
i have a 9 bolt posi 3.23 rear end in my garage i am putting 1LE brakes on. currently on my 88GTA is a 2.73 rear posi drum rear. GTA originaly came from factory with 3.23 disc rear. i still have disc prop valve.
QUESTIONS:
well, to change the backing plates on my 3.23 9bolt i am going to need to pull the axles out. (right?) i poped the mangled cover off and took a peak, looks like it is two bolts per axle, front and center, easy to get too. is it realy that easy?
also, when i put them back in do i need to reseal anything besides the differential cover? (have new cover and gasket on order allready)
so, my braided steel brake lines came with bolts that hold them on the caliper, the bolts have a hole in the middle for the brake fluid to travel through, and near the head of the bolt there is a hole for fluid to enter. but as i turn the bolt the entry hole will move. how do i make sure that the entry hole lines up with the output hole on the brake line end-fitting? also are those called "banjo bolts" or is that somthing else.
thanks in advance.

Mike's checking to see if 9 bolts are c-clip or bearing retained. Anyway, on the banjo bolts you don't have to align anything. The bolt shaft is slightly smaller then the banjo fitting allowing the fluid to flow in around it.
If its bearing retained the 4 bolts behind the axle flange should hold the axle in. You may need to use a puller to remove the axle assembly after removing the bolts.
If it's c-clip you have to remove the pin that holds the center shaft in the differential. Then remove the shaft. Push one axle in and reach in the window of the differential with a magnet to remove the c-clip. Then slide the axle out. |

cool, will there be any "axel seals" to replace or anything? if so i need to order those soon. no one stocks anything for 9 bolts.
thanks brandaon and mike.
also, i noticed a grease fitting covered by a metal cap on my rear end. whats up with that? is it for differential oil or somthing? |

99% sure there are no c-clips on the 9 bolt rear. I thought I had a repair manual but can't find it anywhere... sorry.

no big thing. would the info be in my factory service manual or like a haynes manual? i have both.
so i pull thouse bolts out and then use a "puller" to remove the axel assembly. what kind of puller. i assume i just go into autozone and ask to rent an "axel puller". put the new baking plates on, and then just slide the axels back in and re-bolt them right? |

Since I havent pulled axles on a 9 bolt before, I'm not sure just how hard they'll come out. On other rear ends some simply slide out, others i've had to use a puller. The puller we use is a large slide hammer that connects to the wheel lugs.
Are you sure thats a grease fitting? I'm thinking its probably the axle vent. Is it on one of the top of one of the axle tubes? |

ehhhrrmmmm... i am not sure. probably on the top yeah. i did not pull the metal thing off of the "grease fitting" so i just assumed thats what it has by the base.
my dad definatly has a slide hammer. i'll ask him if it has an atachment to connect to wheel lugs. |

so i am at my dads right now, i got the axel out no problem. put the new backing plate in place, and slid the axel back into the axel housing. it seemed to be all the way in place. i put the bolts back in place for the bearing retainer ring ("u"shaped deal that holds the bearing race tight) and tightned it about a half a turn past finger tight (no clue on tourque specs, hynes manual says nothing?) and the axel still slid right out i loosened the bolts back up and tried smacking the hub with a rubber hammer a few times to get it seated properly, did'nt work. don't want to break anything, i know there are "oil seals" and things that can get damaged so i stoped hitting it with a hammer... whats the deal? how do i get it back in there?
figures, i got it appart and can't get it back together
anyway, i'm gonna put the cover back on it and set it aside for a few hours. i'll check back later. right now i am going to wash and wax the GTA. then go buy pads for my new PBR breaks. i went in to nappa the other day, and the guy handed me som ceramics that looked like they were for a bysicle they were so small i told him i would bring the calipers in so he could match somthing up. |

well as it turns out the backing plates press the axles in. bobby and i are almost done. everything is back onthe rear end, the brakes, lines, hoses, everything. all we need to do is putit back in the car and bleed the brakes. tomorow i will have reports of how awsome my car is with 3.23 rear |

We ran into several problems along the way, thankfully they've all been stupid things that we were able to figure out on our own . Sucker should be installed and bled in 2 hours tops I think. I'll upload the pictures I have from my camera phone, as crapalastic as they are lol |

one of them was legitematly not our fault. when i bought the 9 bolt backing plates they came labled "L" and "R". and apperently L=right and R=left, because thats the only way they will go on without the brakes interfearing with the control arms
we also had to clearence enhance the tracbar mounting point to clear the banjo bolt on the brake caliper. and by "clearence enhance" i mean hit repedadly with a 5LB sledge and a steel rod until it was no longer touching the banjo bolt.
there were also modifications required to the braided steel brake line mounting brackets. one had a bend in the end, for positioning, that we had to flatten in order to position correctly. both mounts came with no hole for the screws to go through, so both needed drilling before they could be installed.
i also had to modify a retainer clip from the ten-bolts drum setup to work as a retainer for a steel brake line. the "earls" braided steel lines came with hoses and mounts but not the clips to hhold the hoses in the mounts.
one other SNAFU we hit: the "9 bolt differential cover" that i ordered from NAPA turned out to be a 10 bolt differential cover. this turned out to be a blassing in desguise. now not only am i NOT out $45... but i also don't have some dumb looking chrome diff cover. (NAPA only sells chrome ones). we re-used the original cover, which turned out not to be as bent up as i originaly thought. |

well, heres the finished product.
sorry, no pics of it installed
it's nice. the car stops a little better now, and my speedometer is now acurate. the car does feel a little faster, and it certainly breaks traction with ease. i still need to perform a "wicked smoken burnout" to test the posi unit.
also, my e-brake cables are wrong. since my car is an 88 disc it has different cables then athe 89+ discs. so still no ebrake, which means no e-brake 180*s and no paul walker sliding toward the camera action (i was actualy getting good at those in the 2.8 )
got the brakes as bled as they are going to get. still a slight moosh, but we would have to pump four gallons of fluid through it to get ALL the air out. |

After we painted the new rear end.

Tony's legs and the old rear end on the ground ready to be pulled out.
Unfortunately, those were the only ones I took of the swap.
All in all it was a fun swap, and I hope that the "new" rear end lasts a long time for yah Tony (though with the way you drive I doubt it :p ) |

Those are some pretty sweet looking breaks
What's with the purple wheel though? You get that for the bird? Is it pretty enough?
You might want to tape off the center of the rotor and give it a quick coat of VHT black or something to keep it from turning that lovely shade of rust. |

| the purple wheel is for my dads 78 nova race car. it is an all black car with purple wheels and a purple rollcage, purple fuel cell, purple helmet and saftey cloathing, purple harness, red seat pad (???). he even has purple wire looming for the engine bay and cockpit electronics. (like twelve wires total) |

Hey Tony, If you do the wicked smoke show, have someone take a picture of it. One thing I didn't do......get a picture. There is still a brutal mark in front of my house from that car. It pissed off my neighbors enough that they called the cops on me.
I bought me a 92 Z34 Lumina from a guy in VA. New crate 2nd gen 3.4 as well as a lot of other goodies. It's a sweet car, can't wait for it to get here. Will be a nice cruiser for my long commute everyday! Turns out I didn't have to wait long to get another toy! Glad you are enjoying the Hot Rod!
