You can use the factory AC controls. Actually not sure if the non a/c controls would work because of all the extra ducting?

Well hmm I forget, does the thirdgen have extra ducting for A/C like the S10's?

I was under the impression the nonAC cars came with blockoffs on the outside vents...

And last time I was out there, the JY on wheaten way in bumtown had one. I was going to pick it up but decided not to. (no cash). I just picked one up form the Pull-a-part off steele st a few weeks ago, they may still have the controls.

The firewall is different for non a/c cars. to change the box you will have to block the hole in the firewal or make it smaller. the vent control in non cars is a cable controlled vents that is located at the bottom of the dash between the drivers legs.

They might have changed it in 82 but all the earlier models the ac hole in the firewall is taller then the non a/c cover.

as i have both a "non ac" and an "ac car" i think i can put this to rest.

NON AC CARS FROM THE FACTORY: have two "Ram Air" (nothing to do with intake) vents in the lower firewall. these are fed by the vents on top of the firewall where the wipers are. they are prone to leaking (in my 86 they leak) and are actuated by two pull cables on the driver side hush pannel. the "right vent" one is prone to breaking as the longer cable requires more force.

they also have blockoff plates over the outermost dash vents. only ac cars have vents in this location.

factory no ac cars have a "vent" setting on the HVAC controls that allows unheated air to enter the cabin

FACTORY AC CARS: do not have "ram air" venting. factory ac cars heater boxes are drasticaly larger to acomidate AC. they hook up the same. the AC blower motor is much stronger then the non ac blower motor. for that reason alone i would leave my AC heater box in the car even W/O ac.

factory AC cars blow air out of the outermost vents on the dash. i do not know where else as my AC does not work.

factory ac cars do have an "economy" selection on the "air conditioning" section of the HVAC controls. this setting passes air over the ac coils but does not activate the air conditioning pump. the purpose of this was to run the ac for a few minutes, switch to "economy" and blow air over the still cooling condensor, then as the air begins to warm flip the ac back on.

LOGIC: why would they make two different frames for a heater box? the firewalls are the same. i however cannot confirm this. i just took a look under my GTAs dash and it looks like there is no way "Ram Air" venting could be retrofitted. i also know that the wiper sorounding vents that allow "ram Air" venting are different as the protrude to be flush with the hood on my 86 and do not on my GTA.

All I was saying is that I swapped a non AC box in my 86 and if fits with no modifications.

what i said does not contradict what you said in any way. i was meaning to clear up any question there may be about the firewalls being different.
