uhm... there is no comparison. it was like i switched from a bycicle to a 500CC street bike....
oh, and that is with 2.73s. wait till i get some 3.23 or 3.42s in it. i can feel it being held back by the gearing. it wants to go faster sooo baddd.....
question...
does anyone else have a 700r4 with 2.73s. my speedo is WAAAYYYY off iand it says i am doing 35 @~55-60ish. i realy need to know some RPM=MPH so i can drive safely i am going to get a ticket inside of a week with this thing the way it is now.... |

tireing. (did i spell that right? i ment it made me tired) but nice.
another question. VSS... do they come in multiple forms for different gear ratios? GMPARTSDIRECT lists two under "all applications". whats the deal? i need to get my speedo working so i don't get killed.
more on how it drives...
with my V6, if i was feeling fast, i would start out at a light and gun it through 1st 2nd 3rd and lay off as i shifted into fourth, and i would be doing 45 and would be ahead of everyone.... in the 5.7 if i hit the gas i am doing 65 before i can blink.... it's ludicrus..... i'm going to kill myself in this car....
thanks all for the compliments. my camera is a piece of garbage (but it was free) when my sister gets back from eugene i will use her 4.0 megapixel cannon to take some real good shots. |

Tony, while I'm not much help, this should help you get a start in the right direction.
There are two "speedo gears" in the tailshaft of the trans. if you take the tailshaft off, you'll find the gears inside there (mine were colored and looked plastic). I know I saw a post on TGO a while ago where some guys were spewing out parts numbers for the two gears for different combinations of rear end gearing/tire size-
Just learn to respect your car and the other people on the road and you should be ok in the death area for the most part. The loud pedal is fun though |

"Loud pedal" is a good term for this car. loud as hell. i managed to take it prety easy on the way home from work tonight. went the long way via glencoe rd and the freeway.just cruising mostly.
my prefered method of "fixing" the speedo is the right rear end and a set of 16" GTA wheels. bring it back to stock. if the vss was a simple plugandplay i would get one temporarily, but if i have to remove the driveshaft...
funstory==> so while i was driving down to oregon, i came alongside a red 87 iroc vert with gold ground effects. as i pass i look over at the driver and we both nodded to each other. it was way coller then that "wave" corvette drivers think is so damned special. unity. made me feel like a baddass. |

you'll need to take the driveshaft off (4 bolts), loosening the tranny mount would probably help gain access a little easier, but it's no big thing. I believe the torque arm mount is on the tailshaft as well, so you'll need to take the torque arm off, or atleast the mount. Then it's only another 4 bolts to get the tailshaft off, and a bucket to get any trans fluid that'll leakfrom the tailshaft (it'll leak a little after you take the driveshaft off too).
from there you'll see the gears, I have not ever taken them out before and messed w/ 'em so I dont know about how to get 'em out, but I'm sure it'll be fairly self explanitory from there.
Unless you are just using the speedo being off as a good excuse to get a rear disk, posi, 3.23's lol.
If that's the case I have a 3.23 posi, rear disk 9 bolt that just needs a new cover gasket, and some fluid in it (note: the rear disk assembly is missing, so you'd have to swap over your disk assembly).
Money has become tight, and I'd prefer to not have to let this baby go, but if you want it shoot me a PM and we'll work something out. |

swapping out the 2 tranny speedo gears isnt to terribly hard I had to do it to get everything lined up
i swapped in a 145 speedo & a 10 bolt disc posi with 3:73 & different size tires
I called a shop back East & the guy told me which gears I needed to fix it
as i recall 1 gear just slides out not too hard, but the other one has to be broken off (usually), use a screw driver & hammer & then tap the new one on gently & wala everytings right on the nose
i did the 1 mile marker test & it came up right on the $$$ |

You may not even have to change the drive gear. Only the easy driven one. There are several places online to find which gears you need. Then just pull the vss out of the tranny and look at the gears. You might have to use a mirror. The gears are color coded. If the right color gear is in the tranny leave it alone. I think there are 2 vss part #s because one fits numerically high #d rears and the other fits most everything else. I changed my rear from 2.73s to 3.23s. Sorry I dont remember the gear colors. But it didnt require the other vss sensor.
What rear end is in your old car? Most v/6 cars had better gearing so the small motor could move the car. Maybe a swap would be in order. |

v6 has a pegleg drum 3.23 in it. i need posi and disk brakes.
the gta came with posidisk stock, but the rearend went bad so it was replaced with what was available at the time. the rear drums hardly work due to it having a disk proprtioning valve. |

My gta's damn rear discs always seized.
I love those cars but god were they problematic.
The power and posi almost, almost...made it worth the daily headache I had.
Your car looks great dude. _________________
