That is pretty interesting to see those numbers. Big boost in ego for what I did to that little 305! |

The V6 in my truck blows away the Chevelle 454 in horsepower and torque. |

Solid ninja-edit there, Jon.
Gross power is dumb, believing auto company claims is dumb, and BBC's are dumb as performance motors, so it makes sense to me. |

Kinda interesting how it peaked at 4600. Wonder how much a cam change would jump that up? |

Cuts right through those rose-tinted glasses so many people view that era through. We truly live in an amazing modern era of power. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

I suspect not as much as it might seem. You still have poor heads, intake, carb design, and an old points distributor with a 50's-era curve in it.
Also consider the power loss from not having a PCV system on any of those engines.
I honestly think you'd see more power from that 283 with an air-gap, Holley VS, HEI and proper crankcase vent than you would with a cam.
All that said, at this point these engines still are used for the same reasons people still run Ford flatty eights in hotrods. To look cool and era-specific. They no longer serve a practical purpose, so judging them by their power is just rubbing salt in the old guy's wounds. |

It would take some work, but anytime you have a 4.250" bore, with the right parts, you have a ton of potential. I dunno, maybe I am a nostalgic geezer, but I do like seeing some properly built big blocks flying around. |

But still when the guy working at the gas station asks you how much power you have, and you respond with anything less than 400, he gives you the "that's all?" Look. _________________

Only the old 283 had no pcv system. The other 2 would have. I don't think you'd find any power in an hei over a fresh point distributor either. Alot of guys are still running the points dizzy at the track even yet. I don't like the maintenance factor or the quality of todays points myself though. The old power pack heads would ultimately be the limiting factor but I think its probably over carb'd for a 283.
What I was looking at was peaking so early with a small motor. Put a cam in there that will peak 6500 or so and let's see what the 283 can do. Maybe even higher.
Now that ls6 454, I know that bb's ultimately have a much higher possible power limit, but seeing that hp rating kind of explains every big block we've seen on the dyno. There's also a reason almost everyone who builds a bb chevy now days goes bigger then 454. Alot of times the heads are just too big for a motor that size. Especially the rectal ports like the ls6 got.
Something else I'm thinking bout. Remember the ls6 required a dual disc clutch and M22 or a th400. That seems kind of laughable now at that power rating. |

Easy to blow up a Wide Ratio Muncie with torque though, that's why the 22. Now put a wide ratio M21 with a supercase behind virtually anything! _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |
