Problem seems obvious now, but neither myself or the machine shop caught it when I had my heads checked out.

Swapped to LS6 beehive springs and comp cams retainers that do a better job of centering the valve springs. All is running good again so far. I was begining to think smokey SBCs are just my thing!

Thanks! I figured they would work well. And the GM beehives are pretty well priced

I guess Ive traded one set of problems for another..
Any ideas on what caused this?
There is one retainer in each head that has cracked and broke, and I can see one retainer with a hair-line crack and it looks ready to break.

Nobody ever run into this problem? Having trouble finding an answer. So far people think I over-revved it, or possibly using the wrong keepers.

Off the top of my head. How is the roller/valve alightment? did you check that when you installed everything? Any strange wear or interference marks anywhere in the valve train?

Coil bind ??? seems far fetched, those beehives shouldn't coil bind at the kind of lift you are probably running.

The retainers/locks would be a big issue, if you have say 7* locks, and 9* retainers.

Have you called Comp to see what they say about it?

Been reading up and found that the retainers I installed (comp 774) are actually for a Gen III LS engine. I was supposed to get comp 787 retainers says for (non Gen III)
Soooo that could be a thing....
I think SBC's and LS have a different sized valve stem Embarassed
quick search says LS uses a 8mm or 5/16" valve stem and SBC uses 11/32"
