Time for the next chapter in a series I like to call "Why Did You Buy That Car You Idiot?" alternately titled "Adventures in Broken Subaru Land".
I've always wanted one of these but couldn't stomach the inflated prices. Long story short, a friend of mine blew his up and offered it to me for a price I couldn't pass up. So here we are...
Day 1, dirty and abused.
I waste no time at all and dig into the good stuff.
Original clutch at 216k miles means everything was really messed up. Disk was down to the rivets, throwout bearing and pilot bearing were really bad.
Now we get into the good stuff. Why is my intake manifold full of oil?
Oh. That might do it. Fun tidbit: It still ran. I had to jump it with two batteries but it fired up and moved under its own power.
Couple days later I scored a 120k mile craigslist engine and put it together with resurfaced heads, STI headgaskets, all new seals, new clutch, all new timing components and a good cleaning.
It runs! And it's clean! I'm happy with this outcome.
Proof that it moves under its own power. I've been driving it to work all week.

The Subaru Baja is the ugliest vehicle since the Aston Martin Lagonda. |

Sweet! It may not be real pretty but I always thought they were kinda cool : shrug :
Looks like a pretty good score.

That 2 tone is something else...
Aaron must be the youngest grumpy old man ever. Although in this our tastes are similar.
Funny thing though.. first thing I thought of was Aaron's thread asking about what kind of sporty economical truck he could get... |

In my mind it's one of those things that's so terrible that it wraps back around to awesome. I've always wanted one not because I think they look good but simply because it's one of those things that should not have existed and therefore is pretty unique and pretty cool.
I don't really care for the look either but for the price I couldn't say no. The cheapest one I've seen lately was around $8000 with some up to $13,000; even after the engine swap I have well below $4k into this one.
It is definitely a love it or hate it sort of vehicle. There's not a lot of people who like them but the ones who do, really really like them.
Way less useful than a Subaru wagon. The cargo space is laughable at best.

If you stop and think about it the Brat and the Baja share the same Chevy inspiration. The Brat was a tiny El Camino and the Baja was a tiny Avalanche.
Personally I like the Brat. It's hilariously cute.
...but the rear seats are the most dangerous thing since the full-convert Blazer. |

I have 3 right now. 03 Baja and 99 Legacy for me, 02 Outback Limited for my wife. All of them are manual transmission.
I have owned 13 different Subarus in the last 5 years or so, which is exactly half of the 26 cars I've owned in that same period. None of them have been FWD. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

Still doing good. This is probably the best running Subaru I own. I won't have the 99 Legacy this winter so I might keep this one at least as long as next spring.

OK, I swear this is the last time I'll post the Baja up. If I decide to sell it these are the pictures I'm going to use. It cleaned up pretty nice.
