Helping a neighbor who's car stripped the distrib gear and back of the cam. He finally got most of the parts.
Pull the cam out and it has roller DENTS in the cam(not all spots). I'm trying to figure how that would happen?
Then a few of the rollers that don't appear to be associated with the dents feel like that might have a some slight scuffing. Odd question, could these be slightly polished and re-used? After new cam n such, hes out of cash. In fact, his wife is pushing him to sell the car once its running again.
Next, this is a 400 block that's converted to roller. How do I go about checking the forward/back play to see if the cam button is correct? _________________ 2008 GMC Z71

ok, after analyzing, all the dents are on the initial side of the lobes in the same exact spot. Valves tightened to much? |

Bad oil?
If the valves were too tight, they'd hang open and run like crap if at all.
Pictures would be helpful. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

trying to host from FB here, best shots I can do with garage light and cell phone. Not enough time in the am to pull the good camera out.

Some of the big companies (Comp) sell roller cams that aren't made on proper cores. They're just cast iron instead of steel. The guys who know about this know to order their cams from them on proper cores. Otherwise the rollers wear into the lobes. |

I think this, and his new one is a comp?
can I polish the rollers on his old lifters?
:edit: looks like 4001 is the casting number for both cores |

Depends on how scored the rollers are. This kind of stuff never be afraid to play it safe and get new. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |
