Autozone was cool. They even had another tranny bolt! the employee said it was the first time he had EVER found a bolt for someone.
The transmission is now mounted, the driveline and torque arm are installed. |

Had to take a break for a few weeks, I have been busy. I fired the engine up yesterday! it started and ran, which means I did not screw up any timing or spark. YAY!
Still to do:
*Mount y-pipe and seal.
*reconnect steering shaft.
*reinstall electric fans.
*reinstall front nose.
*reinstall shifter, boot, and center console.
I may also have to do something drastic.. When I first installed my headers I had to switch to a super-thin gasket (which leaked) so my steering shaft would not rub my headers. I figured with the new mounts this would not be an issue so I bought a good crush gasket. Well the shaft rubs the headers again. So I am going to have to "clearance" the header with a BFH; or shim the engine up with some spacers. That second one is a lot of work, and sounds like a bad idea in general.
has anyone had experiance with this? |

A dent in a header pipe is common place in most things.
That aside, why not try unbolting the column and using the slack in the bolt holes to position it away from the header? Move the outer column mount, closest to the wheel, to the passenger side of the car. The firewall mount move to the drivers side of the car to get the best clearance. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

The column sadly has already been "optimized" for best position. |

Paul, you are the man. Over the last year or two since the last installation, the column had shifted. I was able to get juuuust enough space back to allow it to turn with about a playing cards clearance. it will still make contact while the engine is rumbling around, but it hopefully will not be bad enough to restrict steering.
Clearly the only logical solution is an LS swap, the factory manifolds should have plenty of clearance. |

I know where you're coming from. I gotta LS swap my truck now because I have a pinhole leak in one collector that drive me crazy.
Steering shaft clearance is totally not a problem with LS1 Camaro manifolds.

Looks nice.
Engine is running, car is driving. I still have a few issues.
1. My new water-pump is leaking. Now I have to pull that back out and reseal.
2. My steering wheel is upside down.
3. The car has a parasitic drain so bad it kills the battery in 3 days. _________________ 86' firebird (Junked in 2015). 88' GTA (sold in 2020).

Way to go Tony! You have officially leveled up your engine skills! Sounds like a small electical issue, but that is well within your ability I'm sure.

The parasitic drain turned out to be the cargo light in the hatch was on.
I could not see it due to the cargo cover. The rest of those items are now fixed. I have discovered my oil pressure sending unit is not sending, so I have to fix that now. |
