The Pick-A-Part junkyard in Tumwater has been bought out by Schnitzer Steel (the same outfit that owns Pick-N-Pull) and has been rebranded as such.

I talked to one of the guys behind the counter who told me a death in the family forced them to finally sell out.

Immediately their prices have doubled, and they started charging an environmental surcharge. Most of the old wheels and pre-pulled engines have been scrapped out. They weren't taking a door fee, but I would be shocked if they don't institute the usual $2-per-head charge very soon.

Also worth noting that incoming cars seem to have stopped. There was nothing in the disassembly pen, and there were cars out on the yard that have been there since Summer.

John and I were out there last week. They will be instituting the 2 dollar fee soon. Sad
They did have a very crappy 79 Z28 for $1299.00 for sale. No good parts should they even part it out.

Sounds like it will end up being just like all the scrap yard over here on this side of the pond.

Indeed. They were one of the last locally owned you-pull yards around.

NW Auto Recyclers up North is the only one I can think of off the top of my head. Every other yard around here is either we-pull or has been bought out by Schnitzer.

I've heard there is another yard (Tex's) somewhere on the port of Tacoma. I think they part the cars out themselves thought...I might check it out.

Tacoma Auto Exchange.

Place is actually owned by a guy named Tex, fittingly enough. Laughing

Basically a we-pull yard.

Rollins.

Their yard is a disaster area. Nothing is categorized and the cars are piled tight, most of them are sitting on the frame and some are even stacked two-high.

Also their prices suck and the old man behind the counter is a dick. Laughing

Yes, but it's still an option.

There's a bunch of smaller u-pull it places just north of Auburn. I've grabbed some Subaru parts and other parts at them.

Sad! Tumwater Pull-a-Part was one of the best junkyards ever, especially when I worked less than half a mile away from it. Wink I'm continually disgusted by how much Pick-n-Pull charges and how stingy they are on stuff. At Tumwater I would often return with an armload of parts and they would charge me for like two of them and throw the rest in for free. Never see that happen at PnP.

Indeed. I know I've mentioned it before, but their pricing is so bad that they have become uncompetitive with the we-pull yards. Recently I did the power steering on the F-150 and the breakdown went like this:

Pick-N-Pull:

Pump - $36
Pressure line - $9
Return line - $4
Bracket - $15
Door fee - $2
10% "Environmental fee" - $6
Tax - $7

Total - $79

All Auto Wrecking:

Pump with bracket - $40
Lines (set) - $20
Tax - $6

Pulled for me the next morning, $66 out the door.

Tumwater would probably sell that whole mess to you as one assembly and charge $30 for it. Laughing

NW Auto Recyclers up here is pretty good but not as good as Tumwater was. I always end up going to PicknPull though because they seem to have more Subarus.
