I have to go to a highway paving job with my truck and belly dump later this week and I want to take my furd with me. The job is up by John Day which is about 250 miles from here. I am building a tow bar right now for it but need some help with some of the details.
Does anybody know if I can just leave the tranny in park and put the transfer case in neutral? I have heard that I can and I have heard that I have to remove the rear driveline.
Also, as long as the key is on and the steering wheel is unlocked the front wheels will turn with the trailer right?
Am a little nervous because I will barely even be able to see it back there much less notice if something is going wrong.
Brandon, your thoughts on this would be most appreciated.

The loggers tow their rigs around here all the time, even seen them towing behind a road grader. But they dont go 250 miles. I know there's a lubricant pump inside the transfer case. I think it only works off the input side, meaning if the engine isnt running the bearings arent getting lube. Unless your owners manual says different i'd play it safe and tie up the rear driveline. If it was only 20 miles i'd say leave it, but 250 scares me. Yes with a tow bar you want to turn the key on so that the wheels will turn. I've had trouble with a couple of rigs when I got into gravel, like coming out of a driveway onto pavement. The wheels would turn sideways in the gravel, then stay that way when I hit pavement. There was no problem if I stayed on pavement the whole time. My chevelle was really the only rig this happened alot in. But something you'll want to check. Don't want to be peeling the front tires off of the ford. Especially when the big truck probably wont know the pickups even back there. |

Thanks alot Brandon.
Yeah, the thing that scares me most is that I can't see it and I really won't be able to feel ot back there. Empty the truck and trailer will be about 33,000 lbs, so 7500 lbs of pickup isn't going to be too noticeable. |
