Alright so I've done some extensive research into this subject....(roughly 10 mins of googling) and I've found some conflicting info on which valve stem seals to use. Intake, the common answer is the positive type seal, now for exhaust I've been seeing a lot of people using another intake positive seal on those because its a true seal, however they all note that they don't withstand heat as well, and some reference the fel pro high temp option which is an umbrella type, can take the heat but doesnt seal as well...

So what would you guys do? The camaro is undergoing a makeover at my buddy's shop currently but as soon as its cured I'm going to tear into the valve stem seals, I just want what's going to stop my smoking problem and last properly.

Any info on this subject??

Btw here's a teaser of the current work, you may notice something missing, or not if I did the job properly (which I actually pulled off for once)

Orings and umbrella seals are 50-60s technology. Viton is the material. The catch with positive seals is that the guides have to be cut down to accept them . No part number. You get the seal that matches your guide cut dia and valve stem dia. Felpro from summit should do right.

Agggh so I have to tear it down do some measurements then order them? Blarg lol

And yes Aaron I shaved the antenna lol never listen to the radio any way, subs doesn't like the static much. That and after 13 hours of straight work on the car I got a little stupid, one thing led to another, the antenna smacked me in the neck/face and I decided to get rid of it to put it in its place or something Laughing

Sealed Power MV-1888 - Sealed Power Valve Stem Seals
Valve Stem Seal, OEM Design, Each

There's a blurb from summits mobile site, they have oem seals made with Viton I guess, gotta love search filters lol will those work? The heads aren't machined at all except for the studs being tapped out for threaded studs

I got rid of my antenna when I did my paintjob too. It's one of my favorite mods. I replaced it with an amplified FM antenna under my dash pad; it gets better reception than some of my other vehicles now!

The guide holding material of the head casting must be cut down or they wont work. Period.

You want FLEX kind.

Stay way away from these.

Stock O-Ring = Bad

See how fat the casting from the guide is? That area needs to be cut to your seal size - usually 0.500". Also, if it's not cut down enough the valve retainer will contact it depending on your cam/lift/rocker combo.

What do you mean it seems like a lot? Most valve stems are 11/32" and the guide cut down for the seal is 0.5".

You guys also need to keep in mine, if you're burning that much oil, there's a good chance the GUIDE itself is reamed too large causing the valve to move too much and allow more oil down/wear out the seal faster.

Intake seals are really the most important as the oil gets into the chamber from them only. Exhaust seals just make for a messy exhaust outlet.

Ok so the guide is just the part of the head that the valve slides through? What do you use to machine it

Specialized cutter for cutting the guide and the casting for the seal. Perferably in a mill.
