So I'm considering getting an E46 BMW and I'm finding both 5 speed and the steptronic automatics. I've heard bad things about the tiptronics in Audi's, Acura's etc. but never heard anything about the steptronics.

I'd really like a 6 speed manual but I think only certain 330i's had those.

Any insight?

3 series = sports car.

Sports car = manual transmission.

Automatics are for women, drag cars and towing.

That's all the insight I have.

Wait, I lied.

I have further insight.

The E46 is too new and too heavy. Get an E30 or E36 and be much richer and much happier cornering.

Gabe will be along shortly to disagree with me, as he likes the E46.

Cool

Well I figured as much. I really want the manual they're just a little harder to find. But, this will be a daily driver and I like all the bells and whistles of the e46 while not being too expensive.

I like e46s. I don't want to own one though. Does Schultzy still have the m3 vert?

I'm definitely a "only buy the stick shift" kind of guy though, so I'd recommend the manual trans!

I actually agree with Aaron. The E46 isn't a sports car; it's too heavy and numb and expensive and complicated and unreliable. If you want luxury get an E46, go for a ZHP 330i with a 6-speed. If you want an E36 (which I like best) go for a later 328i with a 5-speed or a well-maintained M3 if you can swing it. E30s are old and dumb and too tiny for me so I can't recommend them. Plus they are ridiculously overpriced. Honestly, the E36 is new enough to be nice and still enough of a sports car to be fun.

My wife still has her E46 SMG vert. It's a fun car but I too prefer a full manual. Having said that, the car is nice, quick for what it is and a fun all arounder. The critiques here are fair but based on sports car in a more pure sense. Wife happy = Very Happy

Alright sounds good so far! What about the mechanical aspect of the car? I've read they're actually pretty reliable cars. Any insight from guys that actually work on them?
