I am pulling motkr because I also want to do a cam swap and clean up and paint engine bay. But before I get crazy what tyles and tips and tricks does everybidy have so I dont have problems when putting it all back in. |

Take your time, do it as clean as you want it the first time. Don't talk yourself into short cuts thinking "I can always fix that later" because you won't. Lol just ask these guys when you have questions! _________________

This topic has already gone on longer than it takes to pull the engine from a thirdgen.
Less talk, more rock.
When you paint the engine bay, don't do the stupid thing that everyone does and paint it black. Paint it gloss white instead. Far easier to see and work in. |

I have been lablin. Pics I didnt do because phone didnt have enough juice and nkt enough flash. I do apologisd in advance for questions that may seem dumb or obvious, but I have never done this. And not as knowledgable or good as you guys. quesyions like this. Should I leave carb and manifold attached? Do I need to mark where distributer is. I am assuming it will not be same when I put back in. and the great question on tgo. Should I pull with or with out tranny. |

I always pull them with the transmission attached personally. Never had a problem doing that with a good hoist and load leveler.
I pull with the intake manifold still on usually, use the accessory bolt holes in the heads to lift by. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

I would. I usually leave the waterpump and crank pulley on though. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

Factual!
If you are swapping cams you will retime the distributor anyway.
If the goal of the engine pull is to paint the engine bay then you will want to pull the transmission.
May have already been mentioned, but pull the radiator and fans first. Also, make sure your hoist is long enough to get over the engine. You may have to pull the bumper cover or come in from the side.
Some random engine pull pics to follow:
John and I pull the LG4/700R4 out of Bondo Bucket. Proof positive that you only need a tire iron, a hammer, PB Blaster and Black Butte to pull and engine.
Al and I pull his blown 305. The throat on this hoist was too short. I forget if we came in from the side or what (we obviously left the bumper on it):
Veesix is way easier, you can do it with the hood on. Not actually pulling in this shot, just replacing the oil pan:

True that. Aaron's engine bay idea is a good idea to spot leaks and have lots of contrast while working on things, but the very nature of that means it will always be dirty. So do you value a cleaner looking engine bay or improved accessibility? I think we know which side of that line Aaron falls on.

They grind cams. They're a local small business. They do a lot of work for Subaru guys. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

Here's a novel idea: How about painting the engine bay the same color as the rest of the car? Or is that against the third gen owner code of conduct or something? |

Check: Black on black.
If I had any other color that's what I would do as well. I appreciate a nice form over function aesthetic any day. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56
