I need to make some changes in engine bay to brake lines in order to add roll control and a proportioning valve but I'm not sure what type of flaring tools to buy. These questions seem like deja vu, but I'm not remembering what I was told because it was so long ago.
1. Do our cars use only metric bubble flare, or is it a mix of stuff?
2. Also, with the aftermarket stuff I'm adding, is there an easy way to tell what kind of flare I need to make just by looking at the holes in the roll control and prop valve? I don't have the manuals for the stuff I bought.
3. What are the different styles out there? Is it just "metric bubble" and "45 degree double" flare on brake lines? |

1) Going into the MC and prop vale is bubble.
2) Your valves will probably be tapped for 1/8" NPT and will come with a baggy of adapters. Most common will be 3/16" or 1/4" double-flare IIRC.
Once again I can't tell you what's "right" only what I did. I bought two adapters to go from the mismatched bubble flare of the stock fourthgen MC (you can see the blue anodizing in the picture below) to a standard flare fitting. I then used the 1/8" tapered pipe-to-flare adapters that came with my prop valve and line lock (I seem to recall I had to buy a few extras, including the 45* angled fitting). I used pre-flared lengths of line to jump between. Everything except the two units themselves and the MC I bought at Baxter Auto Parts.
I borrowed Al Hasse's flaring tools (NAPA and Autozone units) and used a peanut cutter to cut the factory flares off the lines. I believe GM used a metric size for the front lines (probably 4.5mm) but it's close enough to 3/16" to work fine. The rear was 6mm I think?
