Well, all the parts to a motorcycle.
~1985 Husqvarna 400. What it SHOULD look like;
Right now a large portion is torn down. The motor is sitting in the frame and the wheels are sitting on the axles. That's about it though. I'm going to make a street bike out of it. Not one of those motard things, a mix between a street fighter and a cafe racer. Modeled pretty closely to this;
I've already bought supersport forks and I'm going to look at a swing arm tomorrow.
How stupid am I? _________________

thats tight. bikes are real fun. i just remembered i had a car the other day
does it run? it seems like it would be hard to get parts for a brand ive never even heard of lol. very original though. are you going for a supermoto look or trying to change everything over to a crotchrocket look? _________________ -Donald

Huscavarna made lots of bikes back in the day. Motor parts should be easy and cman. I love the look of late 70s to mid 80s bikes |

No idea if it runs. The motor is in the frame but there is no tank hooked up and no electronics (all that's in a box). And I'm going to yank the 2stroke out for 4stroke (probably water cooled). My room mate is trying to convince me to do the sumo thing but that's just not interesting to me. Too tall and I'd never use the suspension travel. I picture sumos being like the drift cars of the bike world.
It probably won't be on the road until next summer. I'm still devoting most of my time to the bird. _________________

That's cool and all but I'm interested in building a lightweight cruising bike. _________________

As long as it has an oil tank, i say that too, on a street bike, not having a seperate oil tank kind of sucks, because then you have to figure out the mixing ratio at the gas station. |

Hate the sound, and the smell. Plus this is going to be my "commute to Gig Harbor when there is traffic so I can use the carpool lane" bike. Sustained high rpm is bad for a 2stroke, no? |

I think that depends entirely on the motor, for years road race motorcycles were 2 stroke... they must know how to make them last. |

Some thoughts from a non-motorcycle person:
Sustained RPM will eventually kill any single-cylinder engine, valves or not.
Sustained part-throttle can cause a 2-stroke to overheat. Jetting up may help this but I can't say.
If your neighbors don't already hate you they will as you sit there in the morning warming up that ungodly-loud oil-belching thing.
You will be shifting a lot due to the narrow powerband.
No compression braking could be annoying for a street bike.
FWIW I would finish it as a dirtbike and sell/trade it for a nice road bike. Just my two cents. |

Ian's too hipster for that. Hipster BMW, hipster motorcycle project, hipster vegetarian. It would be too mainstream to ride something that you can just buy, maaaan.
That being said, Ninja 250. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

Well that quashes that idea. Still, Hate the sound hate the smell.

"Nice" bike is out of my one time price range. Before I'd save enough cash to buy a nice bike, the monies would get dumped into the house, the landscaping, the firebird or at least the BMW. I bought this on a whim for $175 and I'll piece it together through the winter. Actually, my room mate just picked up a ~2000 Kiwi dirtbike for CHEAP with a blown motor that he's doing the rebuild/resell thing. Sounds like a profitable venture (If I knew squat about smokers...err 2strokes.)

I also don't like sport bikes or super sports very much.
If the bmw is hipster, then at least cool kids like Aaron are hipster. |

Well I've been had. I was told it was a 400 but I just decoded the frame and motor numbers and it's a 250. Definitely not using this motor. But I think I have the swing arm and wheels sold for what I payed for the whole bike. So if anything, at least I have a free frame. _________________

How many thousands of dollars do you think this "free" frame will end up costing you? |

You guys just aren't hip enough to drive a real hipster's BMW.
Ninja 250 sits more like a standard than a sportbike and if you're not into fairings they look pretty cool streetfightered. I just like them because they're simple, reliable, get great mileage and are a hell of a lot of fun to thrash up to 13k RPM on the twisty backroads.

Well, I have almost the entire front end ordered/bought including wheel/tire/brake/handles and with the parts I've sold I'm positive about a hundred bucks. I'm hoping I can get swingarm/rear wheel/motor for a grand? Lights and jazz for another 200-300? There was a parts bike gsxr600 on craigslist for $300 but I missed it. Something like that would solve all the problems!

A customer of mine has a rickety 2002 and bought an e30 because he liked mine so much. Of course he found a beige 84 318 car.

Streetfighters like that to me are just sport/supersports that some guy broke the fairings on and doesn't have the cash to replace. They don't look like they were meant to be that way. Chop some off the rear of the frame, a different tank/seat and maybe. _________________
