|
I am looking for an isolation relay for the firebirds with the 3 relay 3 wire motors (?-87).
Mine is hosed and Baxters want $150.00 for a new one. I will not have time to hit the yards for about three weeks, so if someone has a parts car they could really help me out.
These seem to be worth about 10.00 used on TGO.
Thanks a bunch. Also everyone who said "replace/rebuild your motors" _________________ 86' firebird (Junked in 2015). 88' GTA (sold in 2020).

That link shows how it works. The center relay setup. _________________

Looked around a bit and can't seem to find a reliable source of the double pole relays in either a single or double throw configuration.
In the interest of doing this cheap and easy I would wire two five-wire relays on each side and jump the coils together. |

I was not able to source anything other than a SPST or SPDT from any reliable electrical supplier.
The only thing that worries me about replacing it is some of the routing and what appears to be a diode inline between the yellow line wire. It looks like maybe the are trying to feed the pink load wire with both of the lines when the relay is open and the diode is there to prevent the switch from backfeeding itself?
Regardless, it can be duplicated or possibly removed. Is it possible to pop the old unit apart and probe it with a meter to see how it's wired? |

i ordered 40 amp relay so the single feed should be enough to power everything. i'm just going to leave that part out, see if it still works. |

You could try building jumpers from the existing connector to the new relays to test the functionality of it before cutting.
Shame you're not closer or I'd tell you to bring it by the shop. I really enjoy this sort of thing, which is good seeing how I always end up with all these electrical projects.
BTW, I drew up a quick diagram. Stock wire colors except for the orange and grey which will be your wires to jump the new set of coils. |
