He everyone,
Been a while, I have been trying to get my 91 rs vert to run, but no luck.
stock 305 tbi been out side all year, or more, was starting and driving when I parked it last, not now. to long out side......Dang....should have put it in the shop instead of out in the weather.........

starter will not crank with key, had a new key cut today since the old one was about wore out, didn't help.
so with the ignition on I used a remote starter, right to the starter, It cranks when I pull the trigger.. throttle body dumps gas, but will not run very long, I manually open the throttle and gas drops (sprays) but wants to die.
if I dump raw fuel in, she will run a bit then wants to die, will not rev at all.
I bet my problem is related to not wanting to crank with the key.

was thinking vats, but Iam not sure. the security light is on in the dash but I cant remember if it was on when I drove it last year,

Any way looking for some direction, been working on it for a couple days, I tried searching 3gen . org as well, I do see the vats postings but was wondering if you all had any suggestions.
thanks much
scott

Vats on a 91 will not allow the starter to crank, I can personally tell you that from experience.

Ive also heard it cuts fuel, but no telling since it wont crank.

On your new key, how did they test it to get you the right resistance? I had one cut at gm, they tested with ohm meter, was not right. Had to go by vin, which cost more but was right.

I took the key down to a lock smith, we checked the old ones resistance, (worked last year), and he cut me a new one,
I can here the fuel pump come on when I turn the key on, she will not crank tho.

so I used a jumper switch on the starter, it cranks then, wants to run a little, I see fuel spraying in the tbi as well, but it will not run, just a few seconds is all.

its gota be something simple, but has eluded me.
I thought if its vats there will be no fuel on at all??

thanks

There is a safety lock on the shifter(if automatic). I think that will keep the starter from cranking.

As for starting, then stalling. I'm wondering if thats spark of some type.

Also, have you checked to make sure no critters lived in the car and chewed on anything?

Scott, good to see you back around here, man.

VATS kills fuel injectors and starter relay. If it runs with a little fuel sprayed down the intake and the starter jumped externally and the security light is on then VATS would be my guess.

Nice to be looking at the car again.

If it kills fuel, I do here the pump coming on and I do get spray into the intake, but the security light in the dash does stay on.

I will be looking at disabling vast with resistors next.

I have to buy a setup to burn chips take it out completely later if all ese fails.
I had all the equipment to do that before but sold it all couple years ago,
so I might as well go to moats if there still around.

However Iam still confused on that darn fuel pump priming the system still comes on when I turn the key on. as well as see it spraying from the injectors, but the car doesn't run if I hit the throttle, she wast to die, never really runs.
I will have to do some reading on the vats tonight.
gota get this thing running again.
Id take the stearing wheel apart but it has that darn air bag on it.

Pulled the ecm yesterday checked it out, looked good, but lots of water in the car from sitting out in the rain for a year.

nice to see you all.

As I understand it VATS allows the fuel pump to prime but the injectors will not fire.

Have you checked the VATS fuse?

Does the security light flash when you try to crank it over?

Does it throw code 53? (Or any other codes other than 12)

Can you hear the VATS relay click when you turn the key? (Drivers side under dash by kick panel)

This is true. My remote start sometimes fails to bypass VATS and, as a result I have to wait the four minutes and start the car normally (seems my alarm needs replacing). When VATS is enabled, the fuel pump does prime but you have no starter enable or injectors.

If what Al is saying is correct. Then either the shifter switch, or the vats RELAY in the kick panel is not working, or the wire is damaged.

The vats MODULE is on the passanger side of the dash, buried way the hell in there(almost touching firewall) where it would take a thief forever to get to it.

Spent more time under the dash, messed with the vats wiring and others.
got it to crank, started right up, then no crank again.
Lol...
Went back in and giggled some wires, and away we go again.
Drove it into the shop, shweeet.
Time to swing down to radio shack, and buy that resistor pack.......for the vats...
It is nice to here it run. The heater works good, she needs a good clean up.
Pretty damp in there, maybe time to start replacing the interior and new soft top, pretty rough shape in and out, damn thing purrs though.

thanks for the help.

Yep,
Finally got to the car yesterday morning.

I unplugged my VATS module from the steering column, plugged in the correct resistance combo, and waaallla, no problems, starts right up.
Security light goes right off, instead of sometimes staying on...and not starting.

since its sometimes tough to get back, and actually put the fix in, I thought Id post it.
thanks much.
