I have a friend who recently got a 88' formula project car with no distributor and no ECM and he is trying to see if the engine is blown or needs to be replaced?....I myself am not too familiar with the 88's 5.7 engines, much less ripping one apart, I am just trying to find some kinda answer to see if the engine can be saved or has to be swapped?....thanks in advance.

Put and ECM on it and a Dizzy in it and see what she does.

You can't really tell without it running.

Check the fluids. Cross contamination means blown or gaskets.

Good battery and a starter and a compression tester will tell you if the cylinders are balanced.

Leak down gauge can show you the condition of the rings if the valves are sealed well.

Get it running.

Why does he suspect it to be a bad engine? Did the seller tell him something?

The car was bought 3rd hand, from someone who had it for a short while and decided not to pursue finishing it, as best it could be determained, the car appeared to have some overhaul work done , the hood struts were already gone and the steering shaft is gonna either be replaced or rebuildt and just hunt down the rest of the missing parts and see if it turns over!
