I am giving my wife one for christmas and have a couple of questions. Is the "Prime membership" worth purchasing?
If you purchased something like this again would you choose this devise?

My wife really wants a devise that she can use while at our kids sporting events ( 90% of the time at a school) and at work on breaks. She will not be using it for work, only for entertainment purposes and checking emails. I just cant see spending a 100.00 a month for an unlimited data plan with a cell phone provider plus the phone. The Kindle Fire was 199.00 and the Prime membership is about 7.50 a month.

Did I miss with this or am I saving 1100.00 a year?

I've got the prime membership and a regular old kindle lol. Anyway, I've had prime about a month. I've used their netflix like streaming service a couple times now. There's not a huge library of free movies though. Still.. $79 a year vs $8 a month.. just for that service. I've also used their upgraded shipping a few times. And if she's a reader then they have "loaner" books you can borrow as if amazon was a library instead of a book seller. The prime membership works for both my wife and I too, so we can both borrow books for our kindles.

All in all I think its worth the yearly fee.

My wife just got a fire a few days ago. Overall, and with only a few days under the belt I would say it was worth the 199. As for the Prime membership, I don't know. We don't have that. It works fine on wifi without it. If you want for checking Email away from a WIFI location then you may need the prime membership, probably will. It runs on android and there are a bunch of apps available for it, but it doesn't seem to be supported by the full android market, so there are apps that you can't get, but maybe that is because we didn't spring for the prime membership?

Anyway loaded with books and games it is pretty good. for us we need WIFI to check Email. For us it's worth the 199.00.

Thanks for the responces. She will be using it in WIFI hotspots for the most part. A guy I worked with mentioned the down side of the Kindle that he purchased for his wifey last year, ease of downloading (spending money). My wife said she would use a credit cars that is soley for the kindle so she can track the download costs. She handles my money much better than I say this should be a win win.

I played with it the last couple of nights, it is addicting.

Oh yes, they make it sooo easy to buy stuff from Amazon. One click and your twenty buck lighter...But as far as books go, they have lots of free titles too.

The prime account is worth it. Unfortunately, I got it before WA decided to tax online purchases, and it more than made up for shipping prices, now, not so much but still makes everything cheaper. Free two-day shipping really pays off, and only $3.99 for one-day. Well worth it! Some items are not prime eligible. There are plenty of movies and tv shows that are free, and more are added periodically. Pretty much the same selection as Hulu or Crackle.
