So there seems to be some problems with hotmail security as of late. Is there any way to make it more secure? I have a good password, mandatory https, but is there a way to register approved mac addresses or require additional authentication? Hotmail help isnt too helpful and the interweb isnt giving me anything.

No, there is not.

Your MAC address never is visible to Hotmail so that's not a plausible security measure.

Mandatory HTTPS is a good step, strong password is great. Also make sure your "Lost Password" security questions are up to snuff and not easy to guess since that's one of the most common attack vectors. (See Sarah Palin's email hack that occured in 2008)

Thats a good idea. Thank you! So would you recommend a password for the security answers?

On a side note, does anyone have a handy way of remembering passwords? On my last phone i had a password protected document that had them all listed. Im almost wishing i had an encypted gadget to manage them.

I use KeePass at home and at work. It's not phone-portable but it is an encrypted volume secured with a master password.

I would make up a password based on the security question. That way you can just have a formula you use to design a unique password based on the question, so it's unique for every site but you don't have to memorize anything complex. Example:

What is your favorite color?
W!yfc?5

What was the make of your first car?
Wwtm0yfc?8

So my example formula is:
1. acronym the question
2. replace characters with similar numbers and symbols e.g. (E=3,A=@,S=$, O=0)
3. question mark at the end
4. count the number of letters in your acronym and put that at the end

Some sights wont let you use the symbols.

Then some sights force so many numbers.

Some require it to be so many long.

Just gets annoying. Sometimes I just want to go back to the 80's Laughing

Hahah, things I should not post on the internet....

but...

From a guy who has to remember way too many passwords, and some that have to be changed every 6 weeks... I have a system I use for most things. I use normal easy to remember words, then add in a number sequence. For example, if my "word" was going to be "crew" so that is all I had to remember, the password would be. c9R7e5w3. Just pick a number sequence that is easy to remember and a word, and which letter to capitalize and you end up with a pretty secure but easy to remember password.

Thats a good method! I will try it out. Personal encryption. Love it.

I really wish websites wouldnt use java or flash. Bring it back to basics with html and not have your lifes information online. Better yet, you cant hack whats not online. So take your banking info and government sites offline.

The other day i was wondering, how long will it take for spammers to use up all the available email combinations?

Something else I have noticed at least with myself is I have become so conditioned to spam and hacks that I usually just expect it. Like I put some ads on craigslist. And I get spam which just puts my title in lower case and then puts a question mark at the end. Makes me wonder what is the point, what are they trying to accomplish and what happens if I answer??

Usually these requirements don't apply to the security questions. Choosing passwords is different. Wink
