I installed the damper on my 427 and turned the engine by hand. Problem is there is a spot where it drags and makes a nice little grinding/scratching noise somewhere in the short block. I can't believe my string of bad luck with getting a decent engine.
I have an engine hoist but not an engine stand. And where do you get a good engine stand on Sunday? The only thing I could think of was the Chinese Outlet Store (Harbor Freight). I never shop at harbor freight, and especially when life and limb depend on it. I made an exception today and bought an engine stand from Harbor Freight. There was no way I was buying a 3 legger, and the 4 legger was only 1000-lb Chinese which is about 250-lb American. So I got the 2000-lb model figuring it would be just right for my 500-lb engine.
About to open it up.... |

| Found the problem right away (fortunately). Rod bolt is rubbing the oil pan. The relief in the pan isn't sufficient with my rod/crank combo. |

Awe thats minor Jon, you need to stay focussed on the bigger problem, that pesky fan mount touching the wonder bar. |

| A little minor work with a grinder and the engine turns smoothly now. I took a little time to knock down some casting flaws while I was in there. |

Pretty soon salt will go on the roads and there won't be any rush because the car won't come out until May after the roads are washed clean again.
I'm tinkering here and there because I just do it for fun. Seems what has slowed me down more than anything is not having the right parts or tools when I want to do something and then the weekend goes by without making progress.
Honestly, it seems like it will go really quick once I have all parts. Lay the fuel system, solder a few wires, and then all the big parts bolt together. Done. |
